Select the correct option based on statements below:
Assertion (A): | Phosphorus chlorides (tri and Penta) are preferred over thionyl chloride for the preparation of alkyl chlorides from alcohols. |
Reason (R): | Phosphorus chlorides give pure alkyl halides. |
1. | Both (A) and (R) are True and (R) is the correct explanation of (A). |
2. | Both (A) and (R) are True but (R) is not the correct explanation of (A). |
3. | (A) is True but (R) is False. |
4. | Both (A) and (R) are False. |
Thionyl chloride is preferred over PCl3 and PCl5 for the preparation of alkyl chlorides from alcohols. In this reaction, alkyl halide is formed along with gases SO2 and HCl. The two gaseous products are escapable, hence, the reaction gives pure alkyl halides
In the case of PCl3 and PCl5, side products are also obtained and these products are difficult to remove. Thus, it is not less preferred over thionyl chloride.
The reaction is as follows:
phosphorous acid .
