A student performs an experiment on the photoelectric effect, using two materials A and B. A plot of Vstop versus ν is given in the figure.

(i) Which material A or B has a higher work function?
(ii) Given the electric charge of an electron =1.6×10-19 C, find the value of h obtained from the experiment for both A and B.

Comment on whether it is consistent with Einstein's theory.

Hint: The work function of a material depends on the threshold frequency.

Step 1: Find the value of the work function for A and B.

(i) Given, threshold frequency of A is given by ν0A=5×1014 Hz and

For B, ν0B=10×1014 Hz

We know that;

,     Work function, ϕ=hν0ϕ0v0So, ϕ0Aϕ0B=5×101410×1014<1ϕ0A<ϕ0B

Thus, work function of B is higher than that of A.

Step 2: Find the value of h from the experiment.

(ii)

For metal A, slope =he=2(105)×1014h=2e5×1014=2×1.6×10195×1014=6.4×1034Js
For metal B, slope =he=2.5(1510)1014h=2.5×e5×1014=2.5×1.6×10195×1014=8×1034Js

Since, the value of h from experiment for metals A and B is different. Hence , experiment is not consistent with Einstein's theory.
